Mateo damned near laughed out loud at some of her comical sayings, but even he knew now wasn’t the time to push. So he stood staring at her retreating form, that world-class ass of hers swaying back and forth, wishing things were a little less volatile between them. If the food was fit to eat and didn’t make him sick, she’d done a kind thing.

He ran a hand across the back of his neck and groaned. Maybe he should have been more grateful.

“Thank you,” he hollered.

“Bite me!”

He snorted. Hell, he might as well tick her off more. “If you come back, I’ll give you a kiss for the gift.”

She whirled around. “Shite and fall back into it, ye fookin’ numpty.” Her hands fisted, she gave him her back again as she continued on her way.

Hell, the woman could flare up quickly. It would take a strong man to handle all her jagged, combustible edges. Just think of the fun he’d have though. Mateo smiled when he went inside. He placed the bag on the kitchen counter and removed the items. A pan of toffee rested on top of a folded newspaper she’d evidently used to insulate the items below. The rolls were still warm. He opened the top of the plastic round container. Aromas of chicken, leeks, and vegetables wafted up his nose. His stomach rumbled in appreciation.

Fluffy bounced around him and barked.

“Depending on how good this is, it’ll all be for me, buddy.”

Mateo opened a drawer and removed a spoon, dipping it into the soup to taste it. The tepid broth was thick and tasty. Umm, all the flavors and combined textures were just right. He ladled a bowlful and nuked it. Once he devoured this cock-a-leekie soup, he was taking another oatmeal bath and applying more cream to his rash. It was starting to itch again.
